Shakib is the captain till T20 World Cup Sometimes the situation has become very confusing. But the decision was almost taken earlier – Shakib Al Hasan will be the captain of the Bangladesh T20 team until the next T20 World Cup in Australia. He will lead the Bangladesh team in the upcoming Asia Cup T20.
After the meeting with Shakib at BCB president Nazmul Hasan’s residence in Gulshan, BCB’s head of cricket management Jalal Yunus told reporters. Later Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin also announced the Asia Cup T20 team. Sabbir Rahman returned to that team after three years. Saifuddin, who last played in the national team in the 2021 T20 World Cup, is back.
Earlier, BCB had decided to make Shakib the captain of the T20 team for the next two years. But Shakib’s inclusion in the Asia Cup squad is in doubt due to a controversial deal with a website called Betwinner News. Later, he told BCB in an email that he will cancel the controversial contract and stay with the country’s cricket.
Shakib returned to the country from the US late yesterday and went to the BCB president’s residence this afternoon. Other BCB officials and selection committee members were also there. After the meeting with Shakib, Jalal Yunus said that they are leading the T20 team till the T20 World Cup. However, after the meeting, Shakib did not speak to the media.
Jalal Younus said, ‘Shaqib Al Hasan has been selected as the captain till Asia Cup, tri-series and T20 World Cup. We had a meeting on board. We discussed there too. After that, I came to the president’s house and sat for a discussion. Here were the selectors. We have considered Shakib as the captain for these few series.
Jalal Yunus told reporters at the BCB president’s residence that Shakib has admitted his mistake and assured them that he will not get involved in such controversies in the future. Shakib realized his mistake. He really didn’t want to be associated with it. Shakib is definitely an important cricketer for us. In the previous meeting of the board, there was a thought of making Shakib the captain. Now we have decided we will stick to that plan.’
