June 18, 2022 by admin Leave a Comment

Nearby Share is a feature of Google’s mobile and desktop operating systems Android and Chrome OS which allows data to be transferred via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, similar to AirDrop and Android Beam. It allows the rapid short-range exchange of images, videos, text, contact info, directions, YouTube videos, and other data.
Developer: Google
Operating system: Android Marshmallow and later
Initial release date: August 4, 2020
Platforms: Android, Chrome OS
You can send and receive files or apps with Android devices near you.

Important: This feature may not yet work in your region. You may still find this sharing flow even if you have the latest version of the app. This feature is available for Android 6.0 and above.

How Nearby Share handles your data

Nearby Share collects certain information to perform services on your device. Some of this functionality uses Google Play services. For example, Nearby Share collects:

  • Your account and device names for purposes like system functionality and account management. For example, we use your account and device name to help other devices you share with identify the sender or receiver of the transfer.
  • Contacts for purposes like system functionality and account management. For example, you can set up a list of contacts that you’re visible to and can share with.
  • Usage information, crash logs, diagnostics, and other performance data for purposes like analytics.

The data that Nearby Share collects is encrypted in transit.

To turn Nearby Share off on your device, go to Settings and then Google and then Devices & Sharing and then Nearby Share.
